TL;DR: To monetize a video library, pick the way your viewers already want to pay: a subscription, free with ads, rent or buy, or a 24/7 FAST channel. Most owners mix two. Start with rights and a few hundred good titles, not the whole archive. Revidd runs all four from one platform and one set of apps.

You own videos. They sit on a drive, a Vimeo account or a server, and they earn little. This guide is for the owner who wants them to earn. It covers the four main ways to make money from a library, how to choose, what to fix first, and when a different tool is the better call.

What are the ways to monetize a video library?

There are four. Each fits a different library and a different audience.

  1. Subscription (SVOD). Viewers pay on a schedule for access to everything.

  2. Free with ads (AVOD). Viewers watch free. Ads pay you.

  3. Rent or buy (TVOD, and pay per view for live). Viewers pay per title or per event.

  4. FAST channel. Your library plays as a scheduled channel, like TV, free with ads.

A fifth path is licensing titles to someone else's service. That is a different business. It can be a good one, and it is covered near the end.

Which model fits my library?

Match the model to what you have, not to what sounds best.

Your library looks like

Start with

Why

Deep, loyal niche, new titles often

Subscription

Fans pay to keep coming back

Large, older, broad appeal

Free with ads

Reach matters more than what each viewer pays

Big titles, few of them, or live events

Rent, buy or pay per view

Viewers pay once for something specific

Hundreds of hours, can run on a loop

FAST channel

A schedule makes an old archive feel alive

Mixed

Two models together

Free tier brings people in, paid tier keeps them

A simple rule: if people would miss it, charge for it. If people would only find it, give it away and sell the ads.

What should I fix before I launch?

Most libraries are not ready on day one. Fix these in order.

Rights. Write down what you own, what you license and what the license allows. A title you cannot stream online earns nothing. Remove it from the plan now, not after launch.

Files. Gather the best copy of each title. Note which ones have captions or extra audio tracks. Viewers skip a video with bad sound faster than one with no caption.

Details. Every title needs a name, a short description, a poster image and a category. Series need season and episode order. This is dull work and it decides whether people find anything.

A first batch. Do not load everything. Pick the best few hundred titles, or the best few dozen if you are a small producer. Launch, watch what people play, then add more. The Content Library Analyzer can help you sort what you have.

How do I make money from ads?

Free with ads is the easiest model for the viewer and the hardest for the owner, because ad income depends on how many people watch. A small audience earns little. Be honest with yourself about your reach before you pick it.

Two ways to run ads on your own library:

  • On demand ads in your own apps, sold or filled through your ad partners.

  • A FAST channel, where ad breaks sit in a schedule like TV.

Revidd outputs HLS with SCTE-35 markers for your ad partners, so the break points in a channel are marked for them. Read how AVOD works before you commit, and FAST channel revenue if a channel is on your list.

How does a subscription or rent model work?

You set what viewers get and how they pay. Common setups:

  • One plan for everything.

  • A free tier with a paid tier above it.

  • Single titles to rent or buy.

  • A ticket for a live event.

Keep it simple at the start. Two options beat five. If you are unsure what to charge, this guide to streaming subscription plans walks through the thinking. Revidd supports subscription, ad supported, rent or buy, hybrid and pay per view setups, with geo controls to limit where a title plays.

Can I turn the library into a FAST channel?

Yes, if you have enough hours to fill a schedule and the rights to loop them. A channel works well for older, broad appeal content. Viewers lean back and watch, the way they do with TV.

It does not work well for a tiny library. A few hours repeated all day looks thin and viewers leave. If that is you, start with on demand and add a channel when the catalog grows.

The full steps are in how to turn a video library into a FAST channel. One thing to know up front: Revidd runs your channel inside your own apps. It does not place your channel on third party FAST services for you. Companies such as Amagi and Wurl specialize in that, so if third party distribution is your main goal, talk to them first.

Where will people watch?

Your library earns when people can open it on the screen they already use. For most viewers that is the TV, then the phone.

Revidd builds native apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio and the web, with 50+ device endpoints from one integration. Apps can be ready in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, plus app store review, which Revidd does not control. More on the apps is on the OTT apps page.

Your brand sits on the app. Viewers see your name, not ours.

When is another option the better choice?

Revidd is not the answer for every library. Look elsewhere if:

  • You want to license titles to other services. A distributor or aggregator will place your titles on their service. Revidd gives you your own service, not a deal with theirs.

  • You have a handful of videos and no plan to add more. A simple video host or a creator tool may cost you less effort.

  • You only want to sell a few courses or classes to a small group. A creator focused tool can be a faster start.

  • Your goal is distribution on third party FAST services. See above. Start with a distribution specialist.

Many owners do both: license some titles out and run their own service for the rest. The two are not enemies. Your own service builds an audience you control. Licensing brings money without work.

What does Revidd do for a library owner?

Revidd is a plug and play OTT and FAST platform. Video on demand, live and FAST channels run in one place, so one library can feed a paid tier, a free tier and a channel without being uploaded three times.

You get:

  • A media library for movies, series, seasons, collections, extra audio tracks and subtitles.

  • Subscription, free with ads, rent or buy, hybrid and pay per view setups.

  • A FAST Program Manager and EPG for a 24/7 channel, with a rescue playlist and an ad filler playlist.

  • A live calendar, plus DVR and catch up for live events.

  • Native apps on every major screen, in your brand.

  • No engineering team needed on your side.

Revidd powers streaming that reaches more than 38 million viewers across 15 countries.

FAQs

How much money can a video library make?

It depends on the size of the audience, the models you pick and how much you promote the service. No honest source can give you one number for every library. Start with a small first batch, measure what people watch and pay for, then grow from there.

Should I use subscription or ads?

Use a subscription if your viewers are loyal and would miss the content. Use ads if your content has broad appeal but low willingness to pay. Many owners use both: a free tier with ads and a paid tier without them.

Do I need to own all the rights to my videos?

You need the right to stream each title online, in the places you plan to sell it. If a title is licensed, check the terms. If you are not sure, leave that title out of the first batch.

Can I keep my videos on Vimeo or YouTube and still monetize them?

Yes, many owners do. Public platforms are a good way to be found. But the audience belongs to the platform, so sending viewers to your own service gives you the customer relationship and more say over how you earn.

How long does it take to launch?

Apps can be ready in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, plus app store review, which Revidd does not control. Getting your rights, files and details in order often takes longer than the apps. Start that work first.

Can I run ads on my library through Revidd?

You can run ad supported setups through your ad partners. For channels, Revidd outputs HLS with SCTE-35 markers for your ad partners.
