If you run a TV channel or station, YouTube is probably already part of your plan. The real question is whether to also launch your own branded streaming apps. For many channels the honest answer is to keep YouTube for reach and add an owned app for the viewer relationship. For some channels, YouTube alone is the better choice. This page covers both. We make Revidd, so we are not neutral, and we say where YouTube wins. The YouTube facts below come from YouTube's own help pages, which we read on October 25, 2026.
TL;DR: YouTube is free to start, has a huge audience and needs no app work. An owned app gives you your brand on TV devices, your own library and your own rules for access and ads. Stay on YouTube alone if you are small, still testing, or only need reach. Add an owned app when you have a library, a loyal audience and a reason to control how they watch.
Should a TV channel use YouTube or its own streaming app?
Use both if you can. They do different jobs.
YouTube is for reach. People already search and watch there. Posting clips and full shows costs you no app build.
Your own app is for ownership. Viewers install your app, see your brand, and watch on the TV in your look and your menus.
Most channels do not have to pick one. The mistake is treating YouTube as the only place your audience lives.
What does YouTube give a TV channel?
A large audience and discovery. Viewers find you through search and recommendations, with no app install.
Easy publishing. Upload, go live and schedule from one place.
A way to earn. Under the YouTube Partner Program, ad earnings need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified long form watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Source: YouTube Help, YPP eligibility, read October 25, 2026.
Some ad controls. Partners can turn ads on or off per video, but ads only run on content that meets YouTube's advertiser friendly guidelines, and turning ads on does not guarantee they run. Source: YouTube Help, earn money, read October 25, 2026.
What does YouTube keep for itself?
The rules. YouTube sets the monetization terms. Its help page says it is introducing updates to the Partner Program starting February 1, 2027, and creators must accept the updated terms by January 31, 2027. Check what changes for you.
The experience. Your show sits next to other channels and recommended videos. Viewers leave to something else with one click.
Eligibility. Ads depend on YouTube reviewing your content and your channel.
None of this makes YouTube a bad choice. It means the platform, not you, makes the calls.
What does your own streaming app give you?
Your brand on the big screen. Your name and icon on Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV, plus iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
Your own access rules. Free with ads, subscription, pay per view, or a mix. You choose, not the platform. (SVOD, AVOD, TVOD and hybrid are all supported.)
One home for everything. On demand library, live shows and a 24/7 channel that plays all week, run from one CMS.
Ad partner readiness. Revidd supports SCTE-35 markers for your ad partners.
An app also costs more effort than a YouTube channel. You need content that gives people a reason to install it.
YouTube or your own app: which fits your goal?
Your goal | YouTube alone | Your own app |
|---|---|---|
Reach new viewers | Strong. People already search there | Weak on its own. You bring the audience |
Launch fast with no cost to start | Strong | Slower. Needs setup and app store review |
Your brand on TV devices | Limited. You are one channel among many | Strong |
Choose how viewers pay | Limited to YouTube's options | Subscription, free with ads, pay per view or a mix |
A 24/7 channel in your own apps | No. It plays inside YouTube, not your app | Yes, from the same CMS as on demand and live |
Control the rules | YouTube sets them and can change them | You set them |
Low effort to maintain | Strong | More work than a channel |
When is YouTube alone the better choice?
Stay on YouTube if:
You are just starting. Prove people want your content first.
You only need reach. If your goal is views and brand awareness, an app adds little.
You have a small library. An app with a few videos gives people little reason to come back.
You have no one to run it. An app needs fresh content and someone to look after it.
YouTube ads already meet your needs. If you earn what you need and the terms suit you, there is no rush.
This is a judgement based on how channels usually work, not a source claim.
When does an owned app make sense?
You have a library and a schedule. You publish often enough to keep a live or 24/7 channel full.
You want viewers to find you by your brand. Not by whatever YouTube recommends next.
You want your own access or pay options. Subscription, pay per view, or free with ads.
You want to be on TV devices under your own name. Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Apple TV, Fire TV and Android TV.
You do not want to hire engineers. A white label platform handles the build.
Revidd is a plug and play white label OTT and FAST platform. Apps can launch in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, plus app store review, which is outside our control. Read more on Revidd OTT apps and what a white label OTT platform is.
Revidd powers streaming that reaches more than 38 million viewers and 5.2 million monthly active viewers across 15 countries.
Where does an owned app fall short?
No built in audience. An app does not bring viewers. You send them from YouTube, your broadcasts and your social channels.
Setup and store review. There is a launch step that YouTube does not have.
Ongoing content. A thin library makes a weak app.
We do not place your channel on third party FAST services. Revidd gives you your own channel in your own apps.
How do you use both?
Keep posting clips and highlights on YouTube to bring people in.
Point viewers to your app for full shows, the live channel and extras.
Choose what stays free on YouTube and what lives only in your app.
Review after a few months and adjust.

FAQ
Is it better to use YouTube or my own streaming app?
Use both if you can. YouTube gives reach. An owned app gives you your brand on TV devices and your own rules. If you are small or only want reach, YouTube alone is fine.
Can I make money on YouTube as a TV channel?
Yes, through the YouTube Partner Program. Ad earnings need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified long form watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, per YouTube Help on October 25, 2026. YouTube has said Partner Program updates start February 1, 2027.
Do I need an app if my viewers already watch on YouTube?
Not always. If your goal is views, no. An app helps when you want your brand on TV devices, your own access options and a channel that plays all week.
How long does it take to launch my own app?
With Revidd, in as little as 1 to 2 weeks, plus app store review. We cannot promise a store date.
Which devices can a Revidd app run on?
Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, iPhone, iPad, Android and web.
Will I need engineers?
No. Revidd is plug and play and needs no in house engineering from you.
